Another happy customer here. This helped me out so much! Thanks a million!!!!

When you had your carb heater off, was there a rolled piece of metal in it? Almost like a spring pin? I had my carb off recently for cleaning and it had one in it. What confuses the heck out of me though is that with it in there it restricts any coolant from flowing. I couldn't blow through it or spray any cleaner through it at least (unless it magically opens up when warmed up which wouldn't make sense). I wasn't able to pull the pin out either and it didn't look like it was dirty or plugged up with junk.

I just bought the bike as well - a 2004 with around 25000km - and based on how little maintenance the previous owner did, I doubt he ever touched the carb.

Any insight?

Thanks

My bike was sputtering on takeoff from idle. The accelerator pump diaphragm was dry rotted. Thanks to Mr. VTX for this amazing write up. I've belonged to a lot of forums over the years for my cars, bikes, etc, and this is THE best documented piece of work I've seen.

Cool...glad you got her back up and running.(y)

Quick question for all you carb experts. I tore down my carburetor to do a deep cleaning after sitting for a few years. I was cleaning the slow jet and noticed it did not have a hole all the way through the center like the high jet does. Is this correct, or maybe a blocked jet? I didn’t want to force something down into the hole and make it worse.
Thanks, Tom

I was able to run a small strand of wire through the pilot jet, but not a small paper clip all the way through. I think there may be a small cross-section of metal down the hole, maybe to help atomize the fuel better? Not sure.

Great. Thanks for the advise. I did try a small paper clip. I will try something smaller.
I'm no carb guru but, my understanding is you don't want to use anything that is harder than the material the Jet is made from. You might want to soak the jet in carb cleaner for some time, then try a copper brush bristle. If you use something harder than the jet, you may inadvertently "rejet" by changing the diameter of the hole.
